Since its announcement back in 2017, we haven’t learned much about the upcoming Age of Empires IV. The latest installment in the iconic real-time strategy game is currently in development by Relic Entertainment but does not have a release date. However, a new snippet of information about the development process reveals that Relic is making “great progress” on Age of Empires IV and the game is playtested every day.
“We are making great progress on Age of Empires IV,” writes World’s Edge Studio’s Shannon Loftis. “I don’t want to make you jealous, but we are literally playing this game every single day—both in Washington and in Vancouver.”
“RTS development is funny: it takes a while to build the separate systems (AI, economy, sim, rendering, etc), and then it takes a while for them to come together. But when they do, you suddenly have a game—a game that needs debugging and balance and polish— but the core of the game that you know you’re going to ship. And the best part is that it feels like an Age of Empires game.”
Loftis notes that despite the ongoing pandemic, development on the Age of Empires franchise hasn’t slowed. In fact, the future of the series is looking “extremely bright”, and the studio is “full-steam ahead” on not just Age of Empires IV but also unnamed future projects.
While work continues on Age of Empires IV, the studio has also been busy updating the Definitive Editions of previous games of the series. In 2020, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition received a lot of major updates and additions such as ranked map rotations, battle royale mode, MacOS support, and more. Furthermore, the Lords of the West DLC for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will be launched later this month on January 26th.
It won’t be long before a release window for Age of Empires IV is officially revealed.
