Fix: Spotify Error 409 Login Failed (iOS, Android, Windows,)

Spotify error 409 mainly occurs when logging in to Spotify’s desktop app. It can also occur on iOS & Android devices. This error pops up because Spotify no longer supports old operating systems prior to 2017.

According to one of the Spotify moderators (), the team has decided to end the support for old versions of the operating system. It is because certain features cannot be added to the old Spotify applications on Android, iOS, and desktop due to the old interface.

PlatformMinimum OS Version
iOSiOS 14 or above
AndroidAndroid 5.0 or above
MacmacOS 10.13 or above
WindowsWindows 10 or above

Now that we know all the details regarding this error, let’s dive straight into solutions for this error. We will describe each solution and give instructions on how to do it exactly. Keep in mind that you cannot do anything to run Spotify if you are using an operating system that’s not supported. If your device meets the OS requirements mentioned above then proceed.

1. Clear Spotify Cache

Corruption in the Spotify cache often causes errors while trying to log in. Cache files are the temporary data that applications generate to reduce the loading time.

Cache files store the data that the application often requires for the user. This saves a lot of time as the application uses the cache files to fetch the data rather than requesting the data from the server. However, if there is corruption in the application cache files, it will cause login errors when trying to sign in. Therefore, try deleting the cache data, which will let the application request the data from the server to save as cache files.

Follow the steps according to your OS to clear the Spotify cache.

1.1 Android

  1. Go to the Settings app, then Apps > Manage Apps.
  2. Search Spotify, then tap on it to see more options.
  3. Tap Clear data, then tap Clear all data.
  4. Tap OK to clear the data.
  5. Once done, launch the Spotify app and check if you encounter the login error or not.

1.2 iOS

iOS doesn’t provide a direct way to clear the application cache. To clear the Spotify cache, you will have to navigate to the settings. Since you cannot navigate to the Spotify settings due to login error 409, you will have to use an alternative way to clear the Spotify cache data. To do so, follow the steps:

  1. Open Settings App and go to General.
  2. Swipe down to the bottom and navigate to iPhone Storage.
  3. Find Spotify from the installed apps and tap on it to view more options.
  4. Tap on the Offload App option.
  5. Once again, tap on Offload App. This will remove all the application data, including Spotify files; hence, you will have to install the Spotify app from the Apps Store.

1.3. Windows

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Run.
  2. Press the Enter key to open the Run Window.
  3. Type appdata and hit Enter to open appdata folder.
  4. Go to the Local folder and remove the folder named Spotify.
  5. Once done, launch Spotify, log in to your account, and check for the error.

2. Reset Spotify App (Windows Edition)

This method is for users who have installed Spotify from the Microsoft Store. Windows allows users to reset the Microsoft Store apps, allowing users to clear the cache files, which include the login information. To do so, follow the steps:

  1. Right-click the Start Menu and select Settings to open it.
  2. Navigate to Apps and Features > Installed apps.
  3. Locate the Spotify app and click the three dots.
  4. Select Advanced Settings, scroll down to the bottom, and click the Reset button.
  5. Once again, click the Reset button.
  6. Once done, launch Spotify, and check if you can log in to your account.

3. Reinstall Spotify

If you still can’t log in to your Spotify account due to the error message, try reinstalling Spotify completely from the device. Meaning you should remove the cache files and Spotify application to ensure a clean reinstall. To do so, follow the steps according to your device.

  2. Then, head to iPhone Storage.
