How to Fix PowerShell Has Stopped Working in Windows?

When the PowerShell has stopped working error appears, it usually forces PowerShell to close and sometimes even prevents scripts from executing properly. This error message generally indicates a crash within PowerShell due to various underlying issues. The most common cause of this error is a problem in the system or script execution that PowerShell cannot handle, leading to its sudden termination.

Additional causes include conflicts from running multiple scripts simultaneously, memory limitations, or corrupted PowerShell components.

In many cases, this error occurs simultaneously with high CPU usage or insufficient system resources that fail to support the load required by PowerShell operations. It’s also important to note that this error can be caused by external factors like malware or system corruption.

1. Run System File Checker (SFC) and DISM:

Note: We are aware that you can’t run these commands on PowerShell, but we can run these commands on Command Prompt. However, if your Command Prompt ceases to work, it may be a serious issue caused by malware or a virus.

Both SFC and DISM are official utilities provided by Microsoft, used to repair broken Windows components. They also repair corrupted DLL files, which is one of the common issues that prevent applications from opening and working as intended.

You can learn more about both utilities in our separate detailed guides: DISM & SFC SCAN.

Both utilities can be run directly by just executing certain command lines in Command Prompt.

  1. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
  2. Run the following commands one by one:
    sfc /scannow
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  3. Restart your computer and check to see if PowerShell works correctly now.

2. Disable and Re-enable PowerShell:

When facing issues with PowerShell not functioning correctly, one possible explanation could be that the feature has been accidentally disabled or turned off within the Windows operating system. Re-enabling PowerShell through the Windows Features settings can restore its functionality, effectively resolving errors caused by its absence.

Essentially, this step ensures that the PowerShell component is active and available for use, which is crucial for running scripts and various administrative tasks on your computer.

  1. Press the Windows + S keys together to open the search pane.
  2. Type Windows Features and then click on the Turn Windows Features ON or OFF option.
Clicking on “Turn Windows Features ON or OFF”
  3. Wait for the list to populate, scroll down, and search for the PowerShell or Windows PowerShell entry.
Selecting the “Windows PowerShell 2.0” option
  4. Upon locating it, double-click to expand and tick both checkboxes.
    Checking both boxes
  5. Finally, click OK and verify if the issue has been resolved.

3. Perform a Clean Boot:

Malicious programs and viruses tend to block PowerShell from running so it can’t be used to run remedy commands. In that case, we can use the help of the ‘clean boot’ option in Windows. This option basically only allows officially Microsoft-signed services and drivers to run on startup.

This way no third-party program (including the malicious ones) can be executed, and this may resolve the PowerShell issue in question.

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and hit Enter.
  2. Select Selective startup and uncheck Load startup items.
  3. Move to the Services tab, Check Hide all Microsoft services, and then click Disable all.
    Ds4windows Could Not Open Exclusively
  4. Restart your computer and check to see if the issue still occurs.

4. Use the ESET Poweliks Cleaner

The ESET Poweliks Cleaner is specifically mentioned as a solution because the Poweliks trojan is a known cause of this error. The Poweliks virus is a type of malware that can severely affect system stability and performance, including causing applications like PowerShell to stop working.

  1. Restart the computer and repeatedly tap the F8 key to access the Advanced Boot Menu. Press F8 before the Windows logo shows up, and at the POST screen, continue tapping until the Advanced Boot Menu is displayed. If it doesn’t appear, you should repeat the procedure.
  2. In the Advanced Boot Menu, choose Safe Mode with Networking.
  3. Log into Windows; it will appear limited and stripped down in functionality, which is necessary to remove the Poweliks virus that is causing the PowerShell errors.
  4. Before you move to the next step, make sure that you have followed the steps in the guide titled “Your current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded.” Then, return to this page and continue from step 5.
  5. After downloading, install and run the program. Then, scan your system and follow the on-screen instructions.
  6. Once complete, restart your computer and enter Safe Mode again, as outlined in Step 1.
  7. Next, click here to download Malwarebytes.
  8. Install and execute Malwarebytes.
  9. Perform a full system scan, address the detected issues, and then reboot back into Safe Mode. Refer to Step 1.
  10. Download the ESET Poweliks Cleaner.
  11. Run the downloaded file, ESETPoweliksCleaner.exe. If the system prompts you, click Run, then click Agree to accept the terms of use.
  12. If the ESET tool notifies you that Poweliks is detected, press the Y key on your keyboard to remove it. If not, then your system is clear.

Thanks for posting this. Yesterday I clicked on an article in Facebook, and then I got this virus…I had the powershell errors plus my computer got bogged down with all kinds of processes I had never heard of before, Norton was blocking my computer from connecting to two remote IP addresses, and I couldn’t download anything to fix it while in the user mode I was in when I got the virus. I did the steps here, found and deleted one malware, but then my computer was still acting odd, I reran one of the malwarebytes scans and it found 131 malwares! Back to administrator safemode where I’ve been running other scans like Trend Micro Housecall…once I run that and fixpoweliks64 by Symantic and rerun Malwarebytes anti-rootkit and not find anything, I hope I will be safe. I found an article at Trendlabs where they show there Poweliks is in the registry but even looking at the registry scares me… I was running Norton that you get free from Comcast when this whole thing happened. Not sure if I should reload that or what. Not sure if I need to deactivate restores that were created on my computer from the day before and day of the virus happening.

      Hi Kimberly

      – You should not restore to the previous restore points, it may bring the poweliks virus back.
      – You do not need to re-install any programs now since the poweliks has been removed.
      – You do not need to deactivate restores, your system will automatically create new restore points

      Hope this helps. Thanks

Thanks! I’ve been running every scan out there just to be sure I got rid of this thing, none of the scans find any new virus, but I still feel a bit suspicious since I have a svchost.exe process taking 256,000k of memory, which never used to happen, iexplorer always took the top spots in the list. Its running services which include “desktop window manager session”, “distrubted link tracking client”, “tablet PC input service” and this is not a tablet,”human interface device access”…should I be concerned?

You can disable the tablet service from the service.msc console, i would suggest starting computer in clean boot mode, your computer may be running some programs in the back ground which you do not / normally are not using. I have another guide for removing ransome ware, where you need to create a usb disk to boot directly into hitman, i would suggest you try it http://appuals.com/remove-moneypak-ukash-virus/

      Hi Penny

Did you attempt to download in Safe Mode?

If it is not letting you download, then do the following:

      1. Bookmark this page so you can access it later.
      2. Hold windows key and press R
      3. Type inetcpl.cpl and click OK in the run dialog.
      4. Go to the advanced tab, and click Reset.
      5. Put check on Delete Personal Settings
      6. Click Reset Again.

Penny – I had this problem. In Internet Explorer, I went to Tools -> Internet Options -> Security. My security level was “Custom”. I changed it to the default, which was “Medium-High” and the download was allowed to occur.

Kevin Arrows- this fix worked well, THANK YOU! My Malwarebytes scan looked at 2+ million objects and took 10 hours. The ADW Cleaner step found items to clean in two of the tabs (Files and Registry, I believe). There
were a number of Registry items checked. I clicked on Clean and the software finished. When I restarted the computer, it told me I had an unauthorized version of Windows and wanted my 25-character Windows code to re-authorize my version of Windows. But, all seems to be working fine now.

This worked GREAT!! Thanks for all your info! The only problem I had was the malware would not let me download, so I put on thumb drive and went from there. (I think that was the problem). A strange thing that happened to me, while running the scans I got a recorded call from Windows Service wanting me to press 1 to get help because my software was sending a lot of error to them. Did not understand what the recording was saying so wanted to hear it again, it did not play and the line went dead. (Our computer is like 3 years old I’m sure the service contract has run out)??? Strange, again thanks for the post!!

      KA
      K. Arrows Author Dec 30, 2014

I can surely say, that you did not follow steps correctly.

Did you boot into safe mode and download malwarebytes?

Did you go to the scan tab -> custom scan -> and put check in all boxes in the left pane and then clicked scan?

      JO
      Jon Dec 30, 2014

I was unable to download the malwarebytes on the infected computer. I used another to download/save. Brought to the infected computer which I booted in SAFE mode, ran it, waited forever to have the files updated. Then I ran it. I chose a custom scan and was sure to select the rootkit just as you indicated. I did indeed follow the directions.

Not going well. I repeated the entire process of downloading, running, etc all in SAFE mode. Twice. Each time took 4+ hours. I ran into the issues previously mentioned with security block, resetting IE, etc. When attempting to reboot in normal mode, I learned that my boot sequence had been changed. Fixed that. Now I no longer get the powershell warning but the computer is virtually unusable due to high CPU and memory taken. There are well over 100 processes running and most are duplicates (surrogates?) This issue exists in safe mode also.

I did run the malwarebytes on my other computer (with no known viruses). It picked up a few objects so I quarantined, rebooted to clean, as required. All is well.

When running the malwaebytes on the problem computer it never indicated any objects to be quarantined and cleaned.

Any new help would be appreciated.

    Hi Kevin,
Thanks for this post. Hopefully, it will help out with this issue that I have…I’m currently running the custom scan from Malwarebytes. However, I have 2 questions for you.

    1) Do you know why this virus wouldn’t get detected by McAfee?

    2) When I attempted to run the AdwCleaner, I received the following message:

AdwCleaner.exe is not commonly downloaded and could harm

      Hi Sean

      1. You can download AdwCleaner, it is not harmful.
      2. McAfee, AVG, Norton doesn’t detect rootkits and malwares. I guess, they are not designed to, they would only detect viruses, now is the age of malwares.

      Thanks

I’m running the Malwarebytes scan the way you said to and the scan has scanned 162,953 items at the moment and the scan has taken over 69 hours. Is this a bad thing? The computer has been running super slow so maybe it’s just the computer going so slow, but you said the scan would take only 4-6 hours. Is something wrong with the scan?

    Thanks

        Kevin,
The Malwaresbytes scan has now been running for over a week, having scanned 399000 objects and we have no idea if it is close to finishing or not. It has detected 2 trojans so far. We would like to move forward because we need to as we can’t continue to be without our computer. We rather not end the scan but we don’t know how long it will go on. Do you have a suggestion? Thanks.

    Hi Kevin,
I’m doing the Malwarebytes scan and I’ve done the steps you mentioned above and the scan has scanned 163212 items and the scan has taken over 69 hours. Is this a bad thing? Our computer has been running particularly slow so maybe it’s just because of the tardiness of the computer. Is something wrong with the scan?

    Thanks.

Thank you. I am not very computer savvy and wasn’t sure what was wrong when I was being plagued with this problem. Thanks to you it is now gone. I truly appreciate it. Wish I had something to give. Hopefully those that follow will be able to donate to you. I am broke and this computer is the only real link I have. Thank you. Truly.

Kevin, I was so happy to have found your site. But so far it has not solved my problem. I had both situations, powershell stopped working and current security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded. I followed steps 1-4. Then followed the instructions for “current security settings….”, rebooted and then went back to do step 5. I purchased th Malwarebytes Anti-Malware premium. But I got the message that it cannot be downloaded. After clicking on re-try 2 more times a got the message that the internet explorer has stopped working. After rebooting I noticed that I had the free Malwarebytes Anti-Malware already installed. I was able to upgrade to premium for which I had already paid. I performed the custum scan as described and quaranteened the items. But now I am stuck because I cannot download the other cleaners. I still have a problem with downloading. I went back to “your current security settings do not….” site and repeated the steps, rebooted and tried to download the next suggested cleaner but it does not work. Is there anything else you could suggest to solve this problem?

You can reset your browser, then do step 11 in safe mode.

Sorry, this may sound ignorant but how do I “reset my browser?

    Ute Mar 6, 2015

Kevin, I followed the instructions for ‘your current security settings do not allow….’. I guess this is called re-setting the browser? I did that and it still did not allow me to download anything. Also, when I click on download the message comes up that the internet explorer stopped working.

Kevin… (fingers crossed) I believe it worked! It did find it with your ‘ESET’… should I run it periodically?

No, it is for one time use only. Run it only if your computer is infected.

I think the files are coming across some files that repeats it self but the numbers of the objects scan still increase almost to 2,000,000.

I’m trying this right now. Got through steps 1-9, waiting on AdwCleaner to clean things up. Malwarebytes took almost 4 hours to finish. Hoping AdwCleaner doesn’t take that long, haha! Hoping this all works! NOT going to geek squad….they have no clue what they’re doing…ever.

I just finished that step and got the ‘threat not found’ message, so I should be good. The error messages are no longer appearing. Now I’m fighting a different battle as a gamer with Origin because I can’t bypass them anymore to play any EA Games and it’s giving me a blank log-in screen, haha! Thanks for the info to stop the powershell issue though ๐Ÿ™‚

Nahh, it was a connection issue and internet wasn’t available at the time ๐Ÿ™‚ Origin is a pain in the ass for gamers and wants you to connect to the internet to play anything anymore, even for a game that you have a disc for. Thanks again for the help with the powershell issue! Laptop has been running great all night!

I deleted the virus but still got the “Windows Power Shell has stopped” error. I noticed it comes up after launching Internet Explorer. SFC did not fix it. Startup Repair did not fix it.
Resolution: Go to “Turn windows Features Off/On” and uninstall IE…reboot…go back and re-check it to reinstall. copy the IE.exe from Program files back to the Desktop….viola…no more error.
